Why did Europe, which invented the idea that all men are equal, also produce the Shoah? Why did it stigmatize some of its citizens to the point of destroying them? For many years now, the debate surrounding the singularity of the Shoah has been lively: supporters of the sacred memory clash with right-wing Holocaust deniers and left-wing critics alike. Behind this controversy lies a deeper question: that of the very foundations of democracy. Even today, is equality between citizens enough to found a society that makes room for every man in his difference?
